Czołg Typ 61 Lądowych Sił Samoobrony został wdrożony w całym kraju jako pierwszy czołg krajowy po wojnie. Został wyposażony w działo 90 mm, które zastąpiło poprzednie podstawowe czołgi M4A3 i M24, i stał się okrągłą, odlewaną wieżą na spawanym korpusie. Do 1973 wyprodukowano 560 samochodów w związku z formalizacją w 1961. Potem był eksploatowany do 2000 roku, podczas gdy energia została zmniejszona ze względu na pojawienie się czołgu Typ 74 i czołgu Typ 90.
